How is a tsunami formed?
Basically, the formation of a tsunami can be broken down into a few simple steps.
Below is a simple interactive model of how a tsunami is formed.

There are three simple steps:
Below are two labeled diagrams of the formation of a tsunami.
- A disturbance on the sea floor occurs, (most likely an earthquake) causing a portion of the sea floor to snap up, pushing water up with it (Tsunami Diagram).
- Waves gain velocity and size (Tsunami Diagram).
- As the waves approach the shore, the wavelength decreases and the wave height increases (Tsunami Diagram).
